"The Jigsaw of Life" Program
- January 2 - 5, 2003
Transformational 3-day
Workshop
'The Jigsaw of Life'
Thursday 2 - Sunday 5 January 2003
Mount Martha House (Melways 144, H 12)
The Abbot of Gyuto offers
a New Year outlook on how to live in peace and harmony in the
world.
It is imperative that the sorrow and pain so recently experienced
in 2002 is not permitted to dominate our thoughts in 2003. We
must start afresh, live now and be happy in each moment - there
is nothing better that we can do.
Many thousands of people have
had the opportunity to observe the calm concentration and peaceful,
gentle demeanour of the Gyuto monks as they travel Australia
creating their beautiful sand mandalas. During this very special
3-day workshop, the monks will again quietly and carefully make
a sand mandala for us to wonder at - but this time there will
be a Western version of the mandala as well, to help us to share
in their meditative calm.
Opening night will
include 'The Jigsaw of Life', an original public talk
by the Abbot of Gyuto Monastery
Khen Rinpoche Topgyal Lama
and
popular Melbourne actor Kerry Armstrong will launch a unique
500-piece
'Mandala of Yamantaka' Jigsaw
which offers us the opportunity to practise non-attachment to
the material through an absorbing game for individuals and families.
Life is like a Jigsaw
- It's a puzzle.
- You don't know what fits where.
- It takes shape slowly, over
time.
- There's a fleeting moment of
satisfaction ...
- Then it's all over, and we start
again!
We experience many lives and
deaths within our overall span of existence, and continually
question the purpose of it all - just as we might question the
purpose of a jigsaw. Why do we do it? Is it just to solve a problem?
Evidently not, because we do and redo jigsaws over and over again.
It's the process that's enjoyable. It's the practice of thinking,
of solving a problem, of creating something whole from a mass
of components. The satisfaction lies in the practice itself,
of doing it over and over again, until we fully understand it.
The jigsaw is a perfect metaphor
for life - it's how we live our life, not how quickly we complete
it, that's important. Are you enjoying your life? Why not? Look
at the answer. It's most likely because of something you don't
have now, something that happened in the past, something you
would like to happen in the future. Buddhism teaches that to
live a happy life, we must live now and savour the moment.
The 3-day 'Jigsaw of Life' program
aims to sharpen our thinking and take us beyond idle resolutions
like getting out more, being nicer, meditating and keeping fit.
It will clarify the three basic principles of Buddhist training:
- First, Do No Harm
- Practise Building Peace
- Seek the Wisdom of Direct Experience
'Jigsaw
of Life' Program
Buddhist meditation is now widely
acknowledged as beneficial, but often its
context is overlooked. There are three basic principles inherent
in the Buddhist path: training in ethical conduct, training in
meditation, and training in wisdom.
Workshops and talks over this
inspirational 3-day experience will take us through
these steps and provide a framework for structuring a happier
life.
