the gyuto monks in performance

"The Gyuto Monks have been coming to Australia annually since 1994 to spread awareness of Tibetan culture. They are not academics or theorists, but practitioners - of kindness and compassion shared with others." - The Age, 22 September 1999

  • LATEST NEWS – AS OF JUNE 2008

The Happiness Connection Tour of Australia 2008 continues more successfully than ever. Once again Gyuto Tantric University in Dharamsala has sent a wonderful group of six chanting monks led by Gen Lama Thupten Phuntsok who are enthralling people wherever they go with their powerful and unique presence and mastery of the tantric arts. This year’s group are monks who were all born and brought up in Tibet and who undertook their monastic training in Ramoche Temple in central Lhasa, Gyuto’s original monastery since 1474, before escaping to Gyuto New Ramoche in India to further their monastic practice.
Following three weeks in New Zealand’s North Island where the monks appeared at WOMAD, chanted in collaboration with the Univ. of Wellington’s Gamelan Orchestra, offered a cultural program at Blockhouse Bay, visited Keri Keri, took part in a memorable meeting with local Maori elders at Pakiri and made many new friends – they arrived in Australia in early April.
Since then they have been very busy, initially in Byron Bay where a very popular public program was conducted over two weeks followed by a busy period of puja ceremonies for individuals and local businesses.
The Happiness Conference in Sydney in May was, once more, a pleasure to be involved in and already, the monks have been invited to return next year!
There followed three weeks in schools in South Australia where the impact of the monks on school communities is well understood and appreciated. These are precious opportunities to give children, parents and teachers new ways of dealing with the rigours and disappointments of life and awaken them to their own positive potential. All involved, including Gyuto organizers and monks, find these interactions deeply and profoundly affecting. As one teacher said of the Gyuto Teacher Training & Development Workshop, ‘ ‘This was the most important T &D workshop I have ever done. It has changed the way I teach forever’.

    Dalai Lama Teachings in Sydney
The Gyuto Monks were humbled and pleased to be invited to assist in the preparations for His Holiness’s five day visit to the Dome in Sydney’s Olympic Park Showground. As tantric masters, Gyuto monks play a very specific role in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and thus were able to advise on, and carry out, the ritual requirements necessary for His Holiness’s program throughout the five days. In addition to preparing the altars and stage layout, chanting appropriate prayers, sometimes at the Dalai Lama’s specific request, the Gyuto monks assisted the Ritual Attendant on stage and in between the teachings created a beautiful full size 2 metre Sand Mandala of Chenrezig in honour of  the Dalai Lama, Buddha of Compassion himself and subject of the Initiation Ceremony. They even managed to accept an invitation to the footy from the Sydney Swans which was great fun and apparently had quite an impact on the players in the dressing room after the game when they requested the monks to chant! ( see The Australian June 16 for article/photos and video coverage)
All in all, a wonderful week and an opportunity to catch up, however briefly, with the many Gyuto friends and supporters who attended the teachings.
