avalokiteshvara One day, he was sitting under the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya when the realization dawned on him that through a lack of understanding of the nature of mind, we mistake ourselves and our egos for permanent phenomena, rather than the ephermeral phenomena that they are, and subsequently we engage in the type of karmic activity which keeps us in the continual bondage of the pain and suffering of being born and getting sick and dying.

This moment of realization is what has become known as the enlightenment of Buddha Shakyamuni. From this moment onward, Prince Siddhartha became known as Buddha and he spent the rest of his life teaching these lessons to whoever wished to know, the resultant recorded wisdom becoming identified as Buddhism.

The Buddha's enlightenment consists of the knowledge that one is responsible for one's own experience of happiness or unhappiness, based on cause and effect. There is no independent force judging you as such. The answer to everything is contained within your own mind.
