gyuto monks : in india
Sonam Rigzin, Maureen Fallon and Alice Fallon with the Gyuto Tantric University Meanwhile the new accommodation at Sidbhari is a source of great excitement for the monks. Each room holds only 2 monks ( though undoubtedly, this will immediately be required to fit more ) and each monk has been allocated a bed with new mattress, a sheet and a pillow. For many monks this is the first time they will ever have enjoyed such luxury.

Each floor has toilet and shower blocks though at this stage no hot water. Vegetarian meals are cooked in the monastery kitchens in huge pots and served in new dining rooms. The gompa or meditation hall by now will be decorated with Gyuto thangkas and statues flanking the large, recently renovated Buddha statue and the huge Yamantaka Thangka sponsored by Australia for the new monastery which took three and a half years to paint.

First indications are that the monks are happy in their new home not least because those who require medical attaention are now closer to such facilities.

The official opening of the new monastic home for the Gyuto Monks is expected around the end of this year by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As soon as a date is set, we shall bring you details on the web site.

For these Tibetan refugee monks, the project has been made possible only by the consistent help and support provided by people from other countries who have met the Gyuto Monks on their cultural visits to the west, and who have recognized the unique gifts that they bring to the world through their ancient buddhist spirituality and practice of kindness and compassion.

In a wonderful exchange of generousity, we in the west are thus enabled to implement these ancient practices ourselves - in the process becoming more useful and happy which the Dalai Lama tells us is the meaning of life!
