A LIST of suitable sites for a Buddhist stupa, or monument, is being prepared by Mornington Peninsula Shire's community services director Joe Cauchi.

"I'm exploring site options, Which will preferably be on council land so it doesn't involve any other planning authority,' Mr Cauchi said.

"It won't interfere or alienate any land. It won't be in the middle of a playground.'

The Gyuto monks of Tibet have been involving members of the public in preparing items to be installed in the stupa. The building of a stupa will further reinforce the Peninsula's links to the Gyuto monks, one of several groups travelling the world as ambassadors for peace on behalf of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The monks leave for Sydney today for a performance of their chanting at the Opera House on Sunday.

They will be back at Muranna in Merricks North on Thursday to resume their workshops. The program for August includes dawn and mid-morning meditations, making items for the stupa and evening talks.
