Tibetan Monks Visit Brisbane The Gyoto ("Gyuto") Monks of Tibet were in Brisbane again during the Sacred Music Festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse early this month. The Monks who are from the Gelug-pa lineage, as in the Dalai Lama, have been visiting Australia since 1994. They performed at the festival as well as leading workshops, talks and meditations. Indeed some of their presentations were quite informal with Ness the monk in full garb typing slowly in english at the e-mail desk as folk of all ages and styles walked interestedly behind. The monks live as refugees in
Dharamsala, in the remote North of India, after fleeing their
home country as a result of the Chinese invasion in 1949-50.
At the time the monks' temple the Ramoche Temple was destroyed
and the population of 900 monks decimated. A major part of the
Monks' tour is selling merchandise from their stall in order
to raise money for the building of new accomodation for up to
500 monks at the Monastry where the 14th Dalai Lama is based.
The grand chant master Jangden has invited supporters of the
Monks to India for the opening early next year. He also invited
Australians who have helped their cause to visit him, before
his death, in a free and independent Tibet. Their tantric arts
were well appreciated by the audiences familiar with their culture
as well as newcomers to the spectacle, some of whom walked in
from the adjacent New Farm park. Brisbane Indymedia Website: http://www.brisbane.indymedia.org.au/ ~ | CLOSE WINDOW | ~ |
